Welcome to our Winter Wonderland Newsletter! Each season, we will focus on compiling useful tips, recommendations and information to help you achieve the best looking and feeling skin!
A “Winter Wonderland” sounds splendid, and indeed it can be. Mountains of fresh snow, glittering icicles, mugs of hot cocoa (or eggnog) and holiday cheer can lift your spirits well into the New Year. But for many, cold weather can bring unwelcome skin issues. Don’t fret! Our first Skin Ritual Winter Newsletter will bring bounds of tips and tricks to help you and your skin thrive during this festive time of year!
Winter Skin Tips
Cold weather and indoor heaters deplete moisture from the air, leaving your skin vulnerable to dry, itchy and irritated conditions. Your first line of defense is to moisturize. Adding moisturizer to your skin during your morning and evening routine will greatly help to soothe and hydrate chapped, irritated skin.
Hydrate skin during your morning and evening routine. Moisturize with products that do not contain water in order to keep skin hydrated longer.
Regular lotion contains large amounts of water which, as it evaporates, dehydrates your skin. Products, such as our Hard Lotion, contain only waxes, butters and oils, and gently melt into your skin without evaporating. Enjoy hours of skin-soothing hydration. Carry our convenient small Hard Lotion in your purse to apply after several hand washings. Our new 2.65oz Hard Lotion Bars are a perfect addition to your bathroom.
For extra hydration under the eyes, apply a drop of heavy moisturizer over your makeup. Many of our customers use a small amount of Hard Lotion after makeup application. This extra hydration helps to soothe, smooth and hydrate extra dry skin under the eyes (makeup tends to make extra dry skin look even more dry).
Lips are very vulnerable to winter, so moisturize several times per day and at bedtime. Make sure you use products with natural, non-toxic ingredients. Many popular lip products tend to contain too much wax, which can contribute to dry lips. Our delicious Lip Cocktail Balm has the perfect amount of wax and hydrating, all natural ingredients to keep your lips from "puckering" from the cold!
Don’t forget your feet! Use heavy moisturizer or Hard Lotion before bed – but don’t forget to put socks on! A lukewarm foot bath containing baking soda or oatmeal (you can create finely ground oatmeal by using a blender) does wonders for dry skin on feet. Be sure to follow foot soak with heavy moisturizer and socks before slipping under the sheets.
Consider purchasing a humidifier. Large units can fill a room with moisture, and small ones can be placed and moved wherever you need. If you prefer to add essential oils, aromatherapy diffusers can be used. Essential oil combinations can help you sleep, combat anxiety, create alertness or help when you are sick. Please see essential oil recipes for diffusers in the section below!
Although it is tempting to turn the heat up during a shower or bath, try to keep the temperature a bit cooler, as hot water also can contribute to dry skin.
For dry, irritated or itchy skin, soaking in a lukewarm bath with a bit of baking soda or oatmeal can help soothe and hydrate skin (not to mention how wonderful it feels to take a relaxing bath!) Leave the stress of your day behind and light a scented soy candle, maybe play some relaxing music ....
Use gentle, moisturizing facial care products, preferably oil-based. Skin Ritual facial care products are bursting with healthy, hydrating goodness for year-round skincare and are a perfect solution to your toughest winter skin woes. Try our Clean Face Gentle Oil Cleanse,Face Fix Nighttime Serumand Face Canvas Dry Oil Elixir.
Skip facial products containing charcoal and clay (like facial masks) and choose oil-based products. See our DIY Winter Facial Mask Recipes below!
Hair can also become unruly and dry during winter months. Use hair masks a few times per week, or try putting an oil (like olive oil) in your hair prior to jumping in the shower.
For dry, flaky skin on scalp, a scalp brush is a great tool to exfoliate your scalp prior to shampooing (you can find them on Amazon or at a beauty store). Gently rub scalp brush around your scalp to loosen dry skin. Oil can be added to the scalp for deep conditioning before shampooing. You can add a bit of olive oil or our Face Fix Nighttime Serum to areas of your scalp that need extra hydration – leave oil on scalp for several minutes or as long as you want, and then shampoo.
Alcohol and caffeine can contribute to dehydration, so don't overdo!

Get ready to RELAX! Here's a list of our favorite apps and podcasts to enjoy all year round!
Andrew Johnson "Visualize" App (and other relaxation & meditation apps)
Need help falling asleep? Staying asleep? Read our SLEEP PRIMER for some great ideas to get enough ZZZZZZZs!
A good nights sleep is just as important as breathing clean air, drinking water and eating nutritious food. Without enough sleep, our body and mind won't function properly. Unfortunately, sleep deprivation is a vey serious condition in todays' stress-out world. Here are some proven tips to help you get your best sleep ever!
For those that can't focus on sleep because they are thinking about what they have to do the next day, take the time to write "to do" lists in order calm your mind about tomorrows' schedule.
Create a sleep-inducing bedtime routine. This can include listening to relaxing music, reading a book, taking a bath, meditation, deep breathing exercises, nighttime yoga poses or visualization. There are loads of apps that you can download to help you!
Increase bright light exposure during the day. During winter, artificial bright light devices or a bulb can be used. Exposure to light maintains your body's internal clock, improves energy and helps the quality and duration of sleep.
Reduce or eliminate blue light exposure at night. Electronics devices, such as computers, cell phones, iPads and TVs emit blue light. This type of light exposure at night can trick your brain into thinking its still daytime, can reduce melatonin and can effect your hormones. Some glasses and apps can reduce exposure, but unplugging a few hours before bedtime is best.
Limit your caffeine intake in the late afternoon and evening. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system and can stay elevated in your blood for hours. Stick to decaf tea or decaf coffee in the late afternoon and evening.
Reduce unscheduled or long daytime naps. For some, short daily naps improve productivity. But for others, unplanned or long daytime naps can interrupt their internal clock, making nighttime sleep difficult. Listen to your body and make the right choice when it comes to nap time!
Make an effort to go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day. A consistent schedule does a world of good for a good sleep!
Try taking a melatonin supplement, or explore other supplements (like Magnesium) to help you with your sleep. You can also try spritzing lavender essential oil on your sheets and pillow as well as using your diffuser with relaxing essential oil blends.
Go light on the alcohol. Consuming too much alcohol, especially before bed, can really interrupt your sleep.
Create a dreamy sleeping environment. Make sure it's quiet, relaxing, clean and enjoyable. Be sure that your room temperature is not too cold or not too hot. Around 69-70 degrees F is usually good for most.
Invest in a high-quality, comfortable bed. Soft, silky sheets and an amazing pillow will help you drift off to sleep in no time! My personal favorite - bamboo fiber sheets.
Daily exercise is a proven way to improve both your sleep as well as your health. Just avoid exercising at night, which can act as a stimulus.
